Aasvoëlkrans and Kogmanskloof are probably two of the most rewarding short hikes in Montagu. It has great views of the village and Kogmanskloof and is one of the best places to get an overall feel of the valley and the endless rolling hills to the east. The geology is spectacular and the fauna is a unique mix of fynbos and Karoo. It is here where the Boland region meets the Klein-Karoo and this makes for interesting observations. If you are lucky, a Verreaux’s eagle or a fish-eagle might be prowling the void. Aasvoëlkrans means vulture’s rock. It is testiment to a time when vultures and big game still roamed this area. The trail is only 3,2 km long, but it is steep going up and steep coming down. Kogmanskloof is not so steep but has great views of the village. We can discuss which route will work best for you.
Enjoy a sunrise cup of coffee at the top and marvel at the beauty that unfolds around you. You’ll be back in town in time for a well deserved breakfast. A great way to start your day
